10 Potty Training Tips from Experts and Parents

Is it time to get rid of diapers and start potty training? That means your child has grown up and does not feel good wetting the diaper. Ditching diapers and starting potty training are two different things (and could be nerve-wracking for some parents). But it is doable.

This post will tell you some of the best potty training tips and the benefits of moving from diapers to potty.

Let us start.

Getting Ready

Be sure you and your child are ready for potty training. The first sign to check is if your child can sit up for a long time. Look for signs if your child is ready to shift to potty, such as your child can sit up straight, does not like to wear a dirty diaper, can tell when there is the urge to pee or poop, etc.

Get Rid of Diapers

Babies are not as dumb as we often think. Once you realize that the child is ready for potty training, make a schedule of removing the diaper and leaving the child to move/sit without putting on the diaper. The baby will feel something is missing and may stop peeing or pooing into their clothes. They will then give you signals that they want to pee or poo. Take them to the potty and allow them to realize the waste in their potty.

Go for Potty Shopping

Although they would not know what a potty is, you can take them potty shopping. Let them choose the potty they like the most and buy one for them.

Play Potty Training Videos

Almost every child is a fan of video poems. Find potty training videos and play them repeatedly. They will develop an interest and want to go to the potty and sit. Use this time to train them to potty. Remove their pants or whatever they wear and make them sit on it. Let the video keep on playing. It may work as a potty training video tutorial for the child.

Give an Example

Kids copy what clothes at home are doing. Mothers, why don’t you take your child with you to the toilet? Not at the time, you feel the pressure, but when the kid is feeling it or when it is their regular pooing time.

Take the potty with you. Let the kid adequately sit on it while you sit in the adult’s seat. Talk to your kid and show them how to pass bowel in the potty.

You may also use your child’s favorite doll, teddy bear, or any other character for potty training. For example, the doll is playing with your baby. Suddenly it finds the urge to pass bowel. Take the doll to the potty, make it sit on the potty, and use your voice to act as if the doll is pooing. Once done, make a joyful sound and clean the potty.

Don’t Treat Boys and Girls similarly

God has blessed boys and girls with unique features. You don’t have to treat them alike.

While girls learn more quickly, boys may take longer to learn how to pee in the potty. Give them some extra time. Some parents make a voice or use specific words to help their child pee. Choose the one your kid understands and use it while they are on the potty.

Don’t Make Them Wait

Once your child gets used to potty, do not make them wait for long. They will give you hints. Some kids show the urge to poo by holding their breath. Look for the signals and immediately take them to the potty.

The signs to pee will differ. They may grab you by hand to the potty area if they have not started talking. In short, whatever your kid uses the signal, do not make them wait long. Help them release the waste of time at the right place – the potty.

Do Not Scare with Flushing Sound

Kids are sensitive and easily get scared of things and sounds. Flushing away the poo or pee in the potty may scare your child, and they might stop using the potty.

Throw the waste and flush after you take your baby out of the toilet.

Potty Training May Take Time

Some kids are fast learners and will only pee or poo in the potty. But not everyone is the same. Do not frustrate if your kid is taking time. Keep on trying. They will one day learn how to use the potty.

Twins Make it Easy

If you have twins or two (or more) babies at home, it may be easier to train them to potty. Take one child to the potty while the other passes the waste out.
