Drinking fluids and staying hydrated are helpful when your child suffers from fever. Water is the best fluid. Drinking plenty of water normalizes body temperature and may even relieve fever.
Besides staying hydrated, ensure to monitor signs and symptoms of a severe illness in your child. Maintain a record of;
- The ups and downs of their body temperature
- Coughing frequency and intensity. Similarly, keep a record of flu if they have.
- The body color, if there has been a change.
- The waste (poo, pee, vomit) is coming out.
- Other symptoms as well.
It will immensely help in numerous ways, such as finding a cure from helpful and authentic web pages, discussing the issues with an online consultant, asking for an explanation from your kid’s pediatrician, and comparing the record with other similar records.
This simple step will increase your knowledge. You will be more equipped to deal with such situations and may find it easy to treat the problem the next time the kid has the same symptoms.
It is a good sign if your kid is active and interacts after getting the initial medical assistance at home. But what if your kid isn’t responding well to the treatment you have been trying to deliver?
Why Call Your Child’s Pediatrician When Suffering from Fever?
Keeping your child hydrated is always good for a kid with a fever. Besides that, you should consider calling the pediatrician when the child is:
- Suffering from high fever
- Unusually drowsy or fussy
- Suffering from a severe headache, stiff neck, an unexplained rash, severe sore throat, severe ear pain, or repeated vomiting or diarrhea
- Has an impaired immune system, such as sickle cell disease or cancer, or is taking steroids
- Younger than three months and has a temperature of 100.4°F (38.0°C) or higher
- Suffering from abrupt body temperature fluctuations
There are instances when you are unsure if your child has a fever or not. In such cases, seeking medical advice from a pediatrician is never a bad idea:
- The child is still acting as if s/he has a fever
- The situation is not getting any better
- The fever is not getting better or lasts longer than 24 hours.
- For children above two years and fever then continues for 72 hours.
